Surrounded by fabulous scenery, rugged fell mountains to trek and charming market towns, the Lake District is the perfect place for a dog-friendly adventure. It’s, therefore, no surprise that dog-friendly Lake District has won the title of most dog-friendly destination in our PetsPyjamas travel awards this year.

With so many wonderful walks to enjoy, it really is fabulous for dogs and their owners alike!!  And whether you wish to scale the heights of Cat Bells or Scafell Pike marvelling at the fabulous views on the way, or perhaps prefer a more gentle stroll, there’s plenty for you and your pooch to explore. There are also dog-friendly boat trips around the lake and even a doggie steam train!

We recommend staying at one of the dog-friendly cottages or halls on the Rowley Estate, which are dotted around Cumbria in beautiful rural locations or a contemporary country house hotel perhaps with a relaxing spa attached. Here are five of our favourite places to stay in the dog-friendly Lake District, some with exclusive PetsPyjamas offers for Christmas, New Year and beyond.

Rowley Estates, Cumbria

If you are planning to celebrate a milestone birthday or planning a dog-friendly getaway with family or friends then Rowley Estates makes a great choice. Nestled in the Eden Valley and the Cumbrian Hills, the Estates comprise a cluster of cottages and historic houses in a wonderful rural setting. For a very special event book Blencowe Hall, a Cumbrian castle that sleeps 24 with furry friends included. With crenellated towers and buttressed walls – Blencowe is really stunning.  Or you could stay at Glassonby Hall, a baronial style four bedroomed property with its iron chandeliers, arrow-slit windows, flagstone floor and roaring fires, visit the dog-friendly Fetherston Arms close by, or take the gorgeous walk along the River Eden to Long Meg and her Daughters a Bronze Age stone circle.

The Swan Hotel and Spa at Newby Bridge, Cumbria

The Swan at Newby Bridge set close to the Lake Windermere is also in a lovely rural setting and is a fabulous dog-friendly hotel. It has a wonderfully warm atmosphere, oodles of charm with a pool, playground, and spa. Dog owners will love the fact that you can stay in a lovely New English style cottage in the grounds which can sleep up to eight with a terrace, outdoor fireplace, and fabulous views. And your dog will have acres of space to explore in the gardens and wooftastic walks from the doorstep. There are loads of dog-friendly attractions close by including the Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam railway or take a dog-friendly cruise across the Lakes. We recommend the lovely three-mile walk at Cartmell Fell close by. A list of other doggie walks nearby is supplied with doggie blankets, bowls and towels provided.

Linthwaite House Hotel, Lake District

Linthwaite House Hotel is a five-star contemporary country house situated on a hilltop overlooking Lake Windermere. Your dog will absolutely love the 14 acres of glorious gardens which lead out into woodland, and then onto heathland to their very own tarn with fabulous views down over Windermere. The hotel itself is an Edwardian house – a haven of chic contemporary style and was a family residence until 1969 which gives it its luxurious home-from-home hideaway feel. You can curl up in the squashy sofas surrounded by antique curios in the lounge or just relax by the fire with your dog. As well as being super luxurious the food is delicious with a Michelin starred chef. Visit dog-friendly Grizedale Forest and Beatrix Potter’s House both close by. Wellingtons and walking maps are supplied as well as bowls, blankets and treats for furry friends.

Another Place, Lake District

Set on the shores of Ullswater, England’s second-largest lake, dog-friendly Another Place in the Lake District is super dog friendly with loads to offer adventurous owners and pets. With 18 acres of private grounds, your four-legged friend will love roaming the endless space, and countless footpaths and trails. The hotel itself, an attractive Georgian building combines historic grandeur with contemporary design. There’s a fabulous swimming pool and spa offering facials, massages, body wraps and beauty treatments. And from the lake there’s paddle-boarding, kayaking and wild-swimming and even night swims to watch the stars! A perfect playground for your dog. There are endless trails from the hotel or hike up Arthur’s Pike just 10 minutes drive away or visit the Aira Force waterfall nearby.

Armathwaite Hotel, Lake District

Set on the shores of the beautiful Bassenthwaite Lake, dog-friendly Armathwaite Hall Hotel in the dog-friendly Lake District is a wonderful place for a holiday with your furry family members. This privately-owned, former stately home sits in 400 acres of deer park and woodland has stunning views of the Skiddaw mountains and Lake District Fells. Your furry friend will be in doggie heaven! After an exhausting day or fell walking you can stop by Armathwaite Hall’s award-winning spa which features a thermal suite, treatment rooms, infinity pool and outdoor hot tub. Sale Fell is just a five-minute drive from the hotel – a recommended Wainwright walk or the hotel can even offer Lake District guided walks for you and your best furry friend.
