After dog ownership jumped by nearly a fifth (18%) over the last year and the news that Brits who have had both vaccines may be able to travel to amber list countries later in the summer, many pet owners will be starting to think about potential holiday destinations for their dogs.

Two million dogs travel on commercial flights every year, and a new study has now revealed that Paris is the number one city in Europe for a holiday with your canine.

The research, which was carried out by travel clothing brand, Good Trip Clothing, looked at 50 popular city break destinations across Europe and ranking cities on a number of different factors:

  • Number of dog friendly hotels
  • Number of dog friendly restaurants
  • Parks and nature
  • Average high temperature
  • Travel time by plane from London Heathrow

France’s capital came out on top with an overall score of 216, thanks to its 351 dog-friendly hotels, 184 dog-friendly restaurants and short travel time – just an 80-minute flight. Berlin took the second spot in the list of most dog-friendly holiday destinations with an index score of 211, while Prague followed closely behind with a score of 199. Both cities had one of the cooler annual average temperatures, making it ideal for dogs. Milan and Moscow also made it into the top five for the best place to take your dog on holiday, both scoring 190 scores on Good Trip Clothing’s index.

Despite having more dog-friendly hotels than any other city in Europe (596), Rome only made it to 10th on the list, with its average temperature of 21 degrees centigrade and longer travel time dragging its overall score down.

Monaco, Valletta and Limassol were revealed as the three worst cities to take your dog on holiday. Commenting on the research, Danny Sullivan, founder of Good Trip Clothing, said: “Lockdown saw a huge spike in pet ownership, and naturally many dog owners will be thinking about taking their dog away with them once they can go on holiday again. Hopefully, our research will help make that decision a little bit easier and will mean owners have an amazing holiday with their dogs once the borders are fully reopened.”
