You shouldn’t have to go on holiday to the mountains or to the countryside when what you really want is a beach holiday, just because you’ve got a dog. And there’s certainly no need to wait to go to the beach with your dog until after dark when no one is around to give you a fine. Many ask the question if dogs are allowed on beaches in Spain and the answer can be yes, although this depends on which beach you visit. There are loads of options for dogs to go with you to the beach in Spain, have a swim in the sea and play for hours on the seashore.

Today we’re counting down the 5 best dog-friendly beaches in Spain where you can go any day of the year (even in the summer and high season) at any time and where there are lots of other dogs to play with. Just remember that you need to carry documentation with you and leave the beach clean and the way you found it. It is also important to remember that this summer 2021 is still not a normal summer because of COVID-19 security measures and restrictions, so we recommend that, before going to the beach, you check with the local authorities to find out if there are any restrictions or special measures to be taken into account.

It’s time to prepare your trip with your furry friend and we’re here to help with a selection of apartments and villas for short-term rent near these dog beaches that allow pets… all you have to do is remember to pack a tennis ball or a frisbee and enjoy your holiday on the beach with your dog.

Rubina Beach in Castelló d’Empúries, Catalonia

Playa de la Rubina was the first official dog beach in Spain. Along the full 200-metre stretch of this beach, which borders the town of Roses, your pet can run loose and play with other dogs freely. The beach is found in the area surrounding the Natural Park of the Aiguamolls del Empordà and is a spectacular spot for holidays, both with or without pets.

The waves are gentle, which will help your four-legged friend to pluck up the courage to take a swim. And if after a day of playing on the beach with your dog you want to enjoy a drink in a beach bar, the nearby restaurant at the neighbouring campsite also accepts pets.

La Maza Beach in San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria

Also known as “playa de los vagos” (the lazy beach), this dog-friendly beach opened a few years ago and has now become a favourite of dog owners in Spain. It’s not too big, just 150 metres long, but the golden sand and calm waters will be a real treat for all furry visitors and their owners.

If you want a bit of a rest from the beach, we recommend taking a stroll through the marvellous fishing village of San Vicente de la Barquera this summer 2021, as well as visiting the fishing port, the Punta Silla lighthouse and the Castillo del Rey.

O Espiño Beach in O Grove, Galicia

The municipality of O Grove in the northern Spanish province of Pontevedra offers the beach of O Espiño for all dog lovers who visit the area. This beach is 75 metres long which, together with the 50 metres of O Portiño (the other friendly beach in the municipality), makes for an extremely pleasant space for dogs. The waves are small, meaning that even the timidest dogs will be happy to take a dip.

Cobaticas Beach in Mazarrón, Murcia

The Playa de las Cobaticas is nestled between the famous beaches of Bolnuevo and Percheles in Murcia in the south of Spain. It’s probably the lesser-known of the three but still is spectacularly beautiful and has stunning views to be enjoyed.

This beach is not the easiest to get to, but precisely for this reason, this beach is not busy at all and your doggy can play with lots of free space, ideal for greyhounds and other dogs that love running around!

Agua Amarga beach, Alicante

Dogs that like to summer in the sunny province of Alicante can go to the dog-friendly beach of Agua Amarga this summer 2021, one of the best places to cool off with a dip in the sea. This beach is located between the city of Alicante and Urbanova and has around 250 metres of coastline to be enjoyed.

You can even find special parasols for dogs, as well as sun loungers for humans, and for this reason, since 2016 this has been one of the very best beaches to go on holiday with dogs in Spain.
